The Agoo Church a.k.a. Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Charity

From Manila we went to Baguio on our way to San Fernando City, La Union. There are two routes on getting there – one is through the town of Naguilian and the other, through the town of Agoo. The latter is quite famous and intriguing for me because it was the site of the famous apparition (alleged) to Judiel Nieva in 1993. From then on, the name of the town got stuck in my head so when an opportunity to visit this place came, we opted to travel there.

We didn’t roam around Agoo that much – just visited the town proper where the church is located. It has two belfries and is quite beautiful. I later learned from Wikipedia that:

The parish was founded in 1578 by Franciscan friars John Baptist Lucarelli of Pesaro, Italy and Sebastián de San Francisco of Baesa, Spain. The original church was constructed with native materials, nipa and bamboo (in Barangay Nagreban or Nagrugcan) under its patron saint Francis of Assisi. In 1598, Saturmino Franco, Casimiro Melgosa and Aquilino García finished a 3-tiered bell tower for the church. In the same year, the Augustinians named Saint Monica as the town's new patron saint.

On March 16, 1892, a massive earthquake destroyed the church, paving the way for reconstruction of the shrine of "Nuestra Señora de Caridad" in 1893.[3] It was later demolished and replaced with the present church in 1975.

From the town of Agoo, we rode a bus on the way to San Fernando City, La Union. This side trip to the Baguio Cathedral and Agoo Church is part of our recent trip to Elyu and Vigan.

Urbiztondo, San Juan, La Union (in Pictures)

Our initial plan was to go to San Juan, La Union via Partas bus going to Vigan. However, we didn’t make it to the last trip from Partas’ bus station in Cubao, which is 11:00 PM. So we took a side trip to Baguio City. We rode the Victory Liner bus at 1:00 AM and we arrived in Baguio City around 5:00 AM.

Around 8:00 AM we rode a bus to Agoo, La Union and before midnight we were already at San Juan, La Union (via San Fernando La Union). I later found out that there’s another route from Baguio City to Naguilian and from Naguilian to San Fernando, La Union. That’s for another trip though.

We book a Zen Room at the G Hotel in San Juan, La Union. It’s very accessible to 7-11 and the Urbiztondo Beach. San Juan is a surf town similar to Baler (Aurora) and Siargao (Surigao). However, during our trip last May 31 to June 1, the sea was relatively “quite”. Not much strong waves. It’s definitely not surfing season but we still got to see a lot of surfers and those just learning the sport.

We had our lunch at Tavern By The Sea and dinner at Kabsat. We had an amazing time taking pictures of the sunset. The next day, June 1, is a totally different story. It was raining almost the entire day. In fact, we didn’t take a picture of the sunset because it’s raining and is very gloomy.

San Juan, La Union (or Elyu as the tourists call it) has a lot of bars and restaurants. It’s like Boracay but only the sands of Elyu is the ordinary gray one. The food is expensive in Elyu but there are still cheaper ones that you can find in the back alleys. You just have to be patient in searching for it.

After spending two days in Elyu, we went to Vigan City.
