Alegria is a coastal municipality in the island province of Cebu.
The municipality has a land area of 89.49 square kilometers or 34.55 square miles which constitutes 1.81% of Cebu's total area. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 25,620. This represented 0.77% of the total population of Cebu province, or 0.32% of the overall population of the Central Visayas region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 286 inhabitants per square kilometer or 742 inhabitants per square mile.
During my visit to Cebu in February 2022, there was no bus going from Malabuyoc to Moalboal. So I just rode a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) to the next town of Alegria. It was a quiet town. The church is a simple, single belfry church that seems to be damaged by the recent Typhoon Odette. Across the church is also a plaza with an amazing view of the sea. There’s also an old, ruined baluarte (watchtower) nearby. There seems to be a lot of pirates during the Spanish era thus watchtowers are common in this side of Cebu.
I would have love to visit Moalboal but that will be very expensive via habal-habal. So I returned to Malabuyoc and rode a bus back to Cebu City. I dropped off at the famous heritage town of Carcar.
