Daanbantayan, Cebu Province (in Pictures)

Daanbantayan is a coastal municipality in the island province of Cebu.

The municipality has a land area of 92.27 square kilometers or 35.63 square miles which constitutes 1.87% of Cebu's total area. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 93,502. This represented 2.81% of the total population of Cebu province, or 1.16% of the overall population of the Central Visayas region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 1,013 inhabitants per square kilometer or 2,624 inhabitants per square mile. Daanbantayan has 20 barangays. (PhilAtlas)

Daanbantayan is the northernmost part of Cebu Province that you could visit without riding a boat. I left the North Cebu Bus Terminal around 3:00 AM (first trip) and I was at Daanbantayan around 6:00 AM. This town is famous as the gateway to Malapascua Island but during my Cebu trip, I’m not into expensive island-hopping adventure.

Daanbantayan is a quiet, seaside town with an old church. Rizal monument is nearby as well as the municipal hall and the public plaza. It’s a beach town but the parts I’ve seen (public beaches) were not enticing.

Here are some of the pictures I took of Daanbantayan.

Simala Shrine, Cebu Province (in Pictures)

Simala Shrine, popularly known as The Monastery of the Holy Eucharist, is situated in Barangay Lindogon, Sibonga, Cebu. It is among the most visited religious places in the Philippines.

The monastery is built and owned by the Marian Monks of Eucharistic Adoration (MMEA) who serve as the guardians of the place. It was around 1997 when the church became popular and was often crowded with people who want to offer prayers and wishes to the Blessed Virgin Mary. (Guide to the Philippines)

Last February 21, 2022 I was able to visit the famous Simala Shrine in Sibonga, Cebu (south of Cebu City). I took a habal-habal for P200 (back and forth) from the National Highway. It was raining a bit and the main church is close to tourist at that time, which kinda sucks.

The complex is huge and you’ll see green all around. I was wearing shorts at that time (knees exposed) so I have to rent one of the malang to cover it. I also bought a rose for the image of the Virgin Mary. The place reminds me of Baclaran Church where there are a lot of devotees lighting up candles.

The place is a marketplace for everything Catholic – rosaries, images, statues, novenas etc. There are also a lot of shops nearby that sells t-shirts bearing the name of the place – the Simala Shrine.
